Help Our Hut

3rd Salisbury Scout Hut before 2012 rennovations

This year 3rd Salisbury Sea Scout Group is having a concerted drive to raise sufficient funds to refurbish its hut. Our aim is to raise approximately 47,500; a lot of money for a small but thriving group, which has recently celebrated its centenary.

The current hut was erected in the 1960s from timber and plywood by a group of Scout Masters and helpers. It has no insulation, the plywood cladding needs replacement, the windows are rotting and the lavatory and kitchen facilities are in urgent need to renewal.

The 50 year old plywood is beginning to rot and allow plants and damp in. The windows are rotting, cannot be opened and have become a security risk. Insulation is vital, particularly as the winters are getting colder to maintain the heating within the building, reduce the damp, be more economically and environmentally friendly and to make the building more comfortable for all groups using the hut. New facilities will enable us to expand the range of activities that we are able to offer to our young people.

If we do not act now refurbishment will not be a viable option and we do not have the funds to rebuild.

The total cost of refurbishment is 47,500. We have been doing everything possible to raise funds for our hut and 3rd Salisbury has raised almost half the costs to date. As a group we have also been very fortunate and are extremely grateful to the Big Lottery and Wiltshire Council Community Area grants for supporting us in this project. We need a final 14,000 to make our hut refurbishment a reality.

2012 Update

Although we still have some way to go to complete the renovation, work has started. The cladding has been replaced, the whole building insulated and new double glazed windows fitted throughout making it warm in winter and cool in summer. The building has also been painted inside and out and is now looking smart again.

There are many people and groups who have helped 3rd Salisbury begin the long awaited hut refurbishment. The Big Lottery Fund provided us with an amazing grant of 9500 for our new windows and insulations which has really made a difference this winter! Wiltshire Council gave us a 5000 grant towards the refurbishment. This was supported by Salisbury City Council who gave us 2000 towards the new facias and guttering. These grants along with the amazing support of leaders, parents and friends has enabled us to fully refurbish the external aspect of the hut. Great thanks must also go to Alan Dutfield of AJD Builders who has carried out the work on our behalf, managing to juggle the building work with the times of our groups. Thankyou so much to all who have made our current hut refurbishment possible. Our goal now is to raise funds so that we can start the internal refurbishment of the toilets followed by the kitchen.

What can you do?

If you are interested in making a BIG or even small difference to this great bunch of children, we would be thrilled to hear from you. Please contact the Group Scout Leader
